Nov. 7, 2005 Hampton, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling Team rebounded from a so so opening weekend to dominate the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division meet. UMES went 8-1 on the weekend and improved their record to 15-4 on the young season. Hawk Head Coach Sharon Brummell wasn't pleased with last weekend's effort but was thrilled with the Hawk's performance in Hampton. "We bowled extremely well this weekend, we had high individual and team averages. I challenged them to pick it up and we did. When we bowl at our best you see what we can achieve." UMES came out strong on day one, posting a perfect 5-0 mark, knocking off Howard (1017-967), Coppin State (875-717), Morgan State (1024-845), Delaware State (983-915) and Hampton (1060-877). Individually sophomore Jessica Worsley was on fire, averaging a 230 in four games, totaling 922 pins. Keeping pace was last week's MVP, Maryetta Lewis who totaled 878 pins, a four game average of 219. Also helping to keep the Hawks strong was Christine King. The sophomore tallied 825 pins, a four game average of 206. Worsley rolled the high game of the day with a 247 while Lewis tallied a 244 one game later. On day two the Hawks continued their dominance, going 3-1. The loss was to Howard who beat the Hawks by rolling a 1078 to their 972. "Howard was bowling really well that game," said Brummell. "I can't be upset with an 8-1 record especially when we rolled a 972 in the one loss." The three wins came against Coppin State (924-701), Delaware State (1040-824) and Hampton (1098-848). The1098 was the Hawk's best team game of the weekend.
It was freshman Jamie Culbreth who had the high game of the weekend for the Hawks, rolling a 256 against Coppin State while Sandra Maresca totaled a 253 against Delaware State. Overall, UMES had four bowlers average over 200. Maresca with a 203, King with a 207, Lewis with a 217 and Worsley with a 221. The Lady Hawks also got strong outings from Culbreth who averaged a 196, freshman Laura Zanrucha who averaged a 192, Sara DiScioscia who averaged a 174 and Megan Raymond who averaged a 173. The Lady Hawks next hit the alleys this weekend (Nov. 12th & 13th) against the same five teams but this time in Dover, Del. |
