MILLSBORO, Del. - One day after making a come back to move up to fourth place, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) jumped up to third place overall entering the final day of the Eastern Shore Hawk Classic, held at Millsboro Lanes. The fourth-ranked Hawks of UMES posted a 3-2 mark on the second day, which featured a team game format. They opened the day with a big win over rival no. 6 Delaware State University (DSU) 978-904. The momentum carried them to two more straight wins. They topped no. 7 Arkansas State (876-779) and no. 18 Saint Francis (NY) (917-849). The Hawks then faced new program, no. 20 Valparaiso and fell 955-920. Then the Commodores of no. 2 Vanderbilt bowled brilliantly to top UMES by 100 pins, 1030-930. The star of the day however was the Lady Hawk's Paula Vilas (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) who had the best day of anyone at the tournament. She posted a 1015 pin fall, the only one in the field to top 1,000. Her scores meant an average of 203, again the only one to average above the two centuries mark. Her 242 against Vanderbilt was the second highest score of the tournament. Two other bowlers rolled a 245. Also on solid ground was Kristina Frahm (Oswego, Ill.). Last year's top Hawk averaged a 186.20 with a pin fall of 931. Maria Rodriguez (Ibauge Tolima, Colombia) was 21st overall, knocking down 926 pins and averaging a 185.20. Martha Perez (Bogota, Colombia) was 39th in the 130 plus field. She posted an 867 pin fall. The 4621 pins in team games were second only to Vanderbilt's 4678. That coupled with their 4475 in Baker games combined to put UMES into third overall. They gained on no. 3 Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) as well, down just 212 pins from second place and 336 pins out of first.
After two complete days Vanderbilt is in first, FDU is second, UMES is third, no. 8 New Jersey City is fourth, Arkansas State is fifth, Valparaiso is sixth, DSU is seventh, no. 13 Adelphi is eighth, no. 10 Kutztown is ninth and Saint Francis (NY) is tenth. Perhaps the most frustrating part of the first two days for UMES is their record. It can be expected to see Vanderbilt at 9-1 but FDU is sporting a 6-3 mark and UMES at 6-4. Oddly enough, DSU is 8-2 in seventh and Valparaiso in sixth is 7-2. Four teams are 6-4 and three are 6-3. In the Baker format finals UMES will face NJCU. Vanderbilt will face FDU. The pairings go evenly on down with each team getting three more matches. If UMES wins they face the loser of FDU and Vanderbilt. Win again and face that winner to determine the tournament champion. The Lady Hawks have never finished better than third or lower than fifth in this tournament. They can place no lower than sixth after tomorrow's finale. Action concludes tomorrow, November 22 at Millsboro Lanes at 9:00 a.m. Practice starts at 8:30 a.m. |
