HAWK TALK - 2/8/10

A Weekly Recap of UMES Athletics

Princess Anne, MD - Both the men's and women's basketball teams were in action this week, hosting Hampton to begin the week on Monday and facing Norfolk St. on the road Saturday. The Indoor track team was busy as well, competing in the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. The women's bowling team saw their Capital Classic event postponed due to weather.

Men's Basketball

Junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied a career-high 12 assists, but it wasn't enough to push the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team to victory as they lost, 79-65, to Hampton University Monday night at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.

White's previous high in assists came on November 17, when he recorded 11 at Marquette. In addition to his 12 assists, he recorded nine points, four rebounds and one steal.

Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led the team with 21 points and five rebounds while junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) registered 16 points and three rebounds.

A tip-in at the buzzer was ruled basket interference for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team as they fell, 64-62, to Norfolk State at Joe Echols Hall Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans' Michael Deloach made a jumper with three seconds left in the game to pull NSU ahead, 64-62. After an in-bounds play and two timeouts for the Hawks, UMES had the ball underneath their own basket with 1.8 seconds left on the clock. Senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) received the in-bounds pass in the paint and put up the lay-in as time expired. The basket was ruled as interference on the Hawks and therefore no good.

Burns led the Hawks in scoring with 15 points and five assists. Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds while Haley had 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds.

Women's Basketball

Senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds but Hampton's Quanneisha Perry led a group of three players in double figures as the Lady Pirates defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team, 64-48, at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Monday.

Perry, the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, posted a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds as Hampton evened its record at 10-10 (6-3 MEAC), handing UMES (7-11, 4-4) its second straight loss and fifth consecutive to HU.

Three starters scored in double figures led by 20 points from McBride and a double-double by junior Chena Parker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball ran past Norfolk State, 76-56, at Echols Hall Saturday.

Parker recorded 17 points and 12 rebounds while sophomore Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) chipped in with a career-high 16, including 3-for-4 from 3-point land, and eight boards to help UMES (8-11, 5-4 MEAC) snap a two-game losing skid. Norfolk State (3-15, 0-9) got a team-high 14 points from Tyisha Bridges but the Spartans lost their fourth straight. UMES has now won five consecutive games against NSU.

Indoor Track

Sophomore Akheem Gauntlett (Roselle, N.J.) ran his best time of the season and recorded a new school record with a time of 21.33 in the men's 200-meter dash for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore track and field team at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational this weekend. This time narrowly missed the NCAA provisional time of 21.23.

Junior Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C.) placed just behind Gauntlett in the 200 with a time of 21.83.

In the men's long jump, freshman David Sandiford (Brooklyn, Md.) recorded a season best distance of 6.90 meters. Senior Amon Kiprotich (Kapsabet, Kenya) also registered a season best time of 8:50.01 in the 3000-meter run.

Upcoming Week

Both the men's and women's basketball teams will face North Carolina A&T on the road Monday in Greensboro, while the men will continue on to Durham to face North Carolina Central on Wednesday. Both teams return home to face Florida A&M on Saturday. The Indoor track team will take part in the MEAC Championships beginning Thursday in Landover Maryland.
