HAWK ATHLETICS ANNOUNCES SCHEDULE CHANGES THIS WEEKEND
Feb. 13, 2014
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics department has announced that two sports have cancelled their athletic contests this weekend, while another will postpone activity to another day. The recent inclement weather has forced the UMES baseball and bowling teams to cancel their itineraries this weekend. The indoor track team will no longer begin action at the MEAC Indoor Track Championships today and will start on Friday instead.
"For the safety of our student-athletes, we have made the decision to cancel the trips to Florida and Texas this weekend," said UMES Director of Athletics, Keith Davidson. "The indoor track team will still be able to compete despite having their activity moved back a day. But air travel is not an option and other travel methods are just not in the best interests of the safety and health of our student-athletes."
The UMES bowling team was forced to opt out of the Kat Klash in Houston, Tex., after the recent snowstorm cancelled the team's flights. UMES is one of three teams that were unable to make the trip as both Farleigh Dickinson and Sacred Heart found themselves in the same position. The Kat Klash is still scheduled to go on, but the 22-team event has now been trimmed to 19 teams.
The UMES baseball team was originally scheduled for a three-game set at the University of South Florida, beginning on Friday. The trip was forced to be cancelled because the Hawks could not get a flight out of Baltimore this weekend. The game is not set to be rescheduled. The Hawks will now begin their season next Wednesday at George Washington.
UMES' indoor track team was supposed to begin the MEAC Indoor Track Championships today, but the weather in Landover, Md., proved to be too harsh to overcome. The Hawks will now begin action on Friday at 9 a.m., and continue on through Saturday.
