March 24, 2005 Fairview Heights, Ill. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling senior Ariel Givens, has seen limited action this season. She sat out last year after studying in a University exchange program. She returned to a team that was doing quite well for itself, fresh off a berth in the NCAA Tournament. This past weekend she made a statement that she still has what it takes, winning the individual portion of the IBC Qualifier with an average of 231.67 and a high game of 268. That performance earned her, and the next three finishers, an opportunity to bowl in the IBC Singles Championships, May 22-24 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Olympic Lanes. "I am so proud of Ariel," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "She has always worked hard and been one of my consistent bowlers. Due to her work towards graduation and other commitments, as well as the talented team we have, she has not bowled as much as maybe she would have like, but she put on a show this past weekend, she added." Givens rolled six games of 268, 246, 256, 168, 194 and 258. That was good enough for first place. It was also 46 pins above the second place finisher, Jessica Lesagonicz from Lindenwood University. The entire team gets to participate in the singles qualifying round. Sandra Maresca was the next highest finisher, rolling her way to a ninth place finish with a high game of 222. Megan Raymond was 13th, Jessica Worsley 21st, Erin Fagan 26th, Maryetta Lewis 27th, Kristie Minnis 29th and Christine King, 43rd. The event, which debuted at Olympic Lanes in May 2004, will feature the top 16 male and top 16 female collegiate bowlers in the country competing for national titles. The event replaced the Association of College Unions-International National Championships as the premier individual college-bowling event supported by USBC Collegiate. At the national finals, all 16 participants will bowl eight qualifying games to determine seeding for the match play competition. In match play, participants will compete in a best-of-five, single-elimination bracket, with the winner in each division being crowned as champion of the 2005 Collegiate Singles Championships.
