March 24, 2007 NORFOLK, Va. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed the second day of the 2007 MEAC Bowling Championship at the AMF Military Lanes in Norfolk, Va. Defending MEAC Champion, Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) advanced and will face the winner of the Morgan State/Bethune-Cookman match in the championship final.
The MEAC Bowling Championship final is scheduled for 12 noon on Sunday, March 25 and is the conference's first televised bowling championship match. The broadcast will air on April 5 at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
UMES, who earned the number one seed, will vie for their second consecutive championship title and third overall. The Lady Hawks topped Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman and Morgan State in the best of seven matches during baker play to advance to the championship round.
Number five seed Bethune-Cookman topped fourth seeded Hampton in the round four of the bowling championship. The Lady Wildcats battled Lady Pirates in a tough match up that included a tied game. Bethune-Cookman was eventually victorious with 1279 pinfalls to 1207 pinfalls by Hampton.
Number three seed Morgan State advanced to the semi-final match against Bethune-Cookman with wins against South Carolina State and North Carolina A&T. Their lone lost of the day was against UMES.
The MEAC Bowling Championship wraps up on Sunday, March 25 at 10:15 a.m. beginning with the semi-final round. Admission to the AMF Military Lanes in Norfolk, Va. is free and open to the public. UMES led the pack after the first qualifying round and continued throughout the baker matches in the second qualifying round. The Lady Hawks toppled 3,876 total pins during the four team games. North Carolina A&T was second after four games played with 3,639 pins. Bethune-Cookman (3,420), Delaware State (3,389) and Morgan State (3,379) rounded out the top five.
Bowling action continued with the second qualifying round of baker matches. The Lady Hawks expanded their lead with 3,912 total pins. North Carolina A&T remained in second with 3,550 pins for a total of 7,189 pins. Morgan State was third with 3,576 pins in baker matches and 6,955 pins total. Hampton knocked down 3,500 pins for a total of 6,859 and Bethune-Cookman rounded out the top five with 3,429 pinfalls during the baker matches for a total of 6,849 total pins.
Following today's qualifying rounds, teams are seeded one through eight for tomorrow's bracket play. Number one seed Maryland Eastern Shore will face number eight seed Florida A&M. Number two North Carolina A&T will play number seven Delaware State. Morgan State, who earned the number three seed, will face sixth seeded South Carolina State. Fourth seed Hampton will face fifth seeded Bethune-Cookman. All matches will begin at 9:00 a.m.
