PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—Sophomore baseball infielder Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) and junior bowler Victoria Jones (Baltimore, Md.) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on March 25th. Both athletes are receiving the honor for the first time this season.

Escanilla provided an excellent offensive powerhouse in five games for the Hawks on a week-long road trip. In a game against Duke on Tuesday, Mike went 3-for-4 with a triple, one run scored, 2 RBIs, and a walk. He followed that with a 3-for-5 night with a double in a game against UNC Greensboro on Wednesday. In the three game series against Norfolk State this past weekend, Escanilla went 5-for-10, scoring three times; striking two doubles while drawing three walks. In all, Mike went 11-for-19 with four runs, four free passes, two RBIs, two doubles and a triple, raising his season average to .333 for the season.

Jones, a consistent force for the Hawks’ bowling team all season long, did not disappoint at the MEAC Championships in Chesapeake, Va. this past weekend. In five individual games on Friday, Victoria recorded a total pinfall of exactly 1000 pins with a game high of 242, helping UMES to fend off all five challengers. Jones bowled in all three Saturday Baker matches, also all wins, to earn the No. 1 Seed for Sunday’s Championship Round. The Lady Hawks then fended off a tough fight from Florida A&M to take the championship, four games to three. Jones has helped to pace the team not only this past weekend but all season long, with the third highest individual average of 198.61 pins per game, and a season high of 267.

Escanilla and the Hawks’ baseball team will face off against Towson on Wednesday on the other side of the bay, before returning home for a three game weekend set against the Hornets of Delaware State. Jones and the Lady Hawks will find out their place in the NCAA Championships this Tuesday at 4 p.m., broadcast on NCAA.com. The tournament will take place in Cleveland, Ohio from April 10th thru the 12th.
