PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In the past it has simply been a phone call, but with the emergence of women's bowling on the National scene, the NCAA has moved to a selection show, albeit streamed on the web, to inform the teams of the eight at-large bids to the 2009 NCAA Championships. For the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), currently ranked fifth in the nation in the latest NTCA poll, a bid would mean the sixth straight appearance in the 'big dance.'

"I was surprised," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "A whole selection show when it used to be just a call," it really is a testament to how far the sport has come and UMES is proud to be a part of that."

The NCAA and CBS College Sports have announced that the NCAA National Collegiate Women's Bowling selection show will be broadcast on broadband via www.NCAA.com. The selection show is set to air at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, tomorrow, Wednesday, March 25 from an in-house studio at the NCAA national office.

There are of course some technical requirements to view the broadcast. Microsoft Silverlight will serve as the viewing platform and viewers are encouraged to make sure their computer meets the necessary requirement ahead of time. A trip back to the NCAA Tournament would be the sixth straight appearance for UMES and mean that they have attended every championship since the NCAA started the event back in 2004. Only Nebraska, New Jersey City, Central Missouri and the Hawks have been to all five past National Championships. UMES finished seventh its first three years in the event but then took runner-up honors to Vanderbilt in 2007 before winning the NCAA Championship in 2008.

The Lady Hawks are 7-8 all time in the event.

While the Lady Hawks are the reigning National Champions and sport an amazing 115-39 mark, the second most wins of any team in the nation, it is never a sure thing to make the tournament. In 2008 Fairleigh Dickinson, the 2006 NCAA Champs were not invited to the field of eight. In 2009 there are 57 schools vying for the chance to bowl for the title.

The 2009 version of the event will be held April 9-11 at Super Bowl Lanes of Canton, in Canton, Michigan. It is hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy and the Detroit Metro Sports Commission.
