Orlando, Fla. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling team was sitting pretty at the NCAA Championships after just one team game. They were in third, behind 2004 National Champion Nebraska and 2004 MEAC Champion Bethune-Cookman. Then the wheel came off and they slipped all the way to seventh by the end of all four team games at the lunch break of day one.

While everyone moves on to bowl tomorrow, the seeding round today is important. It is based on total pinfall, the first section made up of team games, where everyone rolls for an individual score, and the second half made up of 20 Baker games. After lunch, the Hawks, holders of the only perfect Baker game in NCAA history, are looking to turn it around.

In game one the Hawks took on MEAC rival Bethune-Cookman College and were out bowled by 56 pins. Since there are no wins or losses recorded at these championships, the Hawks were ok, sitting in third place with 1,029 pins, 125 behind Nebraska. In that match UMES put three bowlers over 200. Megan Raymond was the strongest throwing a 237 while Erin Fagan wasn't far behind with a 231. Sandra Maresca bowling in the anchor position rolled a solid 221.

It was game two where the Hawks fell behind. They managed just an 897 against New Jersey City, who put up a 945 behind a 206 from Jennifer Vines. Jessica Worsley was solid in that game for the Hawks with a 210 but the rest of the team put up a 157, 176, 184 and 170. After that contest they fell all the way to sixth with 1,926 pins, now 279 out of first.

In game three the Hawks allowed the good bowling to be done next to them by Central Missouri State University (CMSU). They were on fire, defeating the Hawks by a whopping 309 pins. The best UMES could muster was a 189 from Maresca and a 185 from Worsley. They totaled only an 839. They fell to seventh, 483 pins behind first place Nebraska. In that game CMSU posted an 1148, the second highest game of the tournament to date. That was behind a perfect game, the first of the tournament from Tina Peak. Others rolled games of 247, 216, and 195.

In game four UMES would regroup, rolling a 970 against Sacred Heart who put up a 1,003. During that same game CMSU rolled a 930, showing how balanced the field is. The pins were not enough at the end of the team games as they still sat at seventh, 653 pins out of first. Worsley, the most consistent all day rolled a 226 while Raymond was right behind her with a 215. Fagan chipped in with a 180.

With individual scores done for the team tournament Worsley would be the highest Hawk ranked in a tie for 14th. Raymond was 19th while Maresca and Fagan were 25th and 26th respectively.

UMES looks to regroup in the Baker games, one of their strongest formats. After those 20 Baker games the seeding will be set and the double elimination bracket will begin tomorrow morning.
