April 13, 2009 PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Sophomores Katherine Brown (Trafford, Pa.) and Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) have been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Athletes of the Week for the period ending April 12.
Brown of the No. 5 women's bowling team recorded the third highest pinfall in team games at NCAA Championshipships last week in Canton, Mich. She took out 881 pins for an average of 220.25.
The Lady Hawks finished seventh in the tournament but their season isn't quite over yet. UMES will compete in the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships in Rockford, Ill., April 15-18.
Alston, an infielder on the baseball team, hit .421 (8-for-19) for the Hawks in a 2-3 week. He had two doubles, drove in four runs, scored twice and walked once.
The Hawks took two-of-three games at North Carolina A&T on the weekend after dropping a mid-week doubleheader at Saint Peter's.
It is the second time this season Alston has earned Athlete of the Week honors.
UMES (10-26, 8-4 MEAC) travels to West Virginia Monday for a 4 p.m. game with the Mountaineers.
