May 18, 2005 Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's bowling team may be done competition for the season but one member is still very much in the hunt for a title. Senior Ariel Givens (Newark, Del./Mt. Pleasant H.S.) is the lone member of the team still in action, vying for the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships (IBC) Single's Title. She qualified for the event by winning the individual portion of the IBC Qualifier with an average of 231.67 and a high game of 268. That performance earned her, and the next three finishers, an opportunity to bowl in the IBC Singles Championships, May 22-24 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Olympic Lanes. Givens has seen limited action this season. She sat out last year after studying in a University exchange program. She returned to a team that was doing quite well for itself, fresh off a berth in the NCAA Tournament. She however was an important part of the team returning to the finals this year. The team also finished fourth at the same IBC Qualifier to attend their third straight IBC Championships. "I am so proud of Ariel," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "She has always worked hard and been one of my consistent bowlers. Due to her work towards graduation and other commitments, as well as the talented team we have, she has not bowled as much as maybe she would have like, but she put on a show at the IBCs," she added. Givens rolled six games of 268, 246, 256, 168, 194 and 258. That was good enough for first place. It was also 46 pins above the second place finisher, Jessica Lesagonicz from Lindenwood University. The event, which debuted at Olympic Lanes in May 2004, will feature the top 16 male and top 16 female collegiate bowlers in the country competing for national titles. The event replaced the Association of College Unions-International National Championships as the premier individual college-bowling event supported by USBC Collegiate. At the national finals, all 16 participants will bowl eight qualifying games to determine seeding for the match play competition. In match play, participants will compete in a best-of-five, single-elimination bracket, with the winner in each division being crowned as champion of the 2005 Collegiate Singles Championships.
