Milwaukee, WI - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Bowling senior Ariel Givens had her hopes of a National Singles Title dashed yesterday as she was eliminated from the field of the 2005 USBC Collegiate Singles Championships. Nancy Lewandowski of Perdue University knocked out Givens in the first round, three games to none.

Givens was the 16th seed entering the first round on May 24. She qualified in that spot after a qualifying round on May 23. She tallied a 1071 in the first block of qualifying, 12th overall, but managed only a 1001 in the second block, dropping her to 16th in the field with a total of 2072 and setting up an opening round match with Lewandowski, the ninth seed.

Participants bowled 12 qualifying games Monday to determine seeding for the best-of-5, single-elimination match play competition beginning 9 a.m. Tuesday. The top four seeds in each division received byes to match play's third round, while No. 5 through No. 8 seeds received byes to the second round. Lewandowski knocked off the eighth seed, Jamie Miller, 3-1 but fell to the number one seed Kelly Zapf 3-2. Zapf went all the way to the finals before falling to the six seed Bianca Montagnino, 3-1. Montagnino, from Newaman College, was presented with the Marion Ladewig Trophy, named in honor of the legendary Women's International Bowling Congress Championship Tournament champion.

Givens still had an outstanding year, bowling not only for the singles title but competing with the Lady Hawks for the NCAA Championship and the IBC Crown.

"I am so proud of Ariel," said Head Coach Sharon Brummell. "She has always worked hard and been one of my consistent bowlers. Due to her work towards graduation and other commitments, as well as the talented team we have, she has not bowled as much as maybe she would have like, but to have competed for the singles championship, that is quite a feat."

Qualifying for the Collegiate Singles Championships was held at the four Intercollegiate Bowling Championships Sectional Qualifier sites - Allentown, Pa.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Fairview Heights, Ill.; and San Jose, Calif. - on March 18. All participants bowled six games with total pinfall determining final standings. The top four finishers in each division (male and female) at each site advanced to the Collegiate Singles Championships.

Newman's Cory Simmons and Nebraska's Shannon Pluhowsky captured the Collegiate Singles Championships' inaugural titles in 2004. The event replaced the Association of College Unions International National Championships as the premier individual college bowling tournament supported by the USBC Collegiate program.
