NASHVILLE, Tenn. - For the second year in a row the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's bowling team has been honored by the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) as an All-Scholars Team. To receive the distinction teams must have had a cumulative grade point average of a 3.2 or better for the 2012-2013 academic year.

The NTCA recognized 23 institutions across the nation for the 12-13 year, up five from last year's total, the first time the award was given. Alabama A&M won the second-year award with a 3.8 team GPA, bumping last year's winner, Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU). The Hawks posted the fifth highest GPA in the nation with a 3.51, tied with the Knights of FDU.

This award is in addition to the individual academic awards the NTCA hands out, which saw six Hawks get the nod last month. Teams honored along with UMES and Alabama A&M included: Adelphi University, Alabama State University, Arkansas State University, Delaware State University, Elmhurst College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Jackson State University, McKendree University, Monmouth University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Sacred Heart University, Saint Francis University (PA.), Salem International University, Sam Houston State University, St. Francis College (N.Y.), Stephen F. Austin State University, Tulane University, The University of Central Missouri and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Vanderbilt University. At the annual UMES Awards Banquet the women's bowling team was named the Female Team of Scholars Award winner, given to the team with the highest GPA among their peers. This is a distinction they have held every year at UMES starting in the 2000-2001 season when it was first presented.
