UMES BOWLING STARTS THE SEASON RANKED FIFTH IN BOTH POLLS
Oct. 22, 2013
NASHVILLE - The National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) Media Poll was released today and it announced the pre-season rankings for NCAA Women's Bowling. Just as they were in the coaches' poll, the Hawks were picked fifth. The difference was that UMES earned one first place vote in the media poll and none in the coaches' poll.
The poll, voted on by NCAA women's bowling media and sports information directors, gave the defending 2013 United States Bowling Congress (USBC) National Champion Hawks 209 total points, trailing fourth place Arkansas State who had 225 points.
Just as they did in the coaches' poll, The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) fell in behind top-ranked Nebraska (277 points), second-place Vanderbilt (251 points) and third place Central Missouri (240 points). Nebraska earned seven first place votes while Central Missouri received a pair and Arkansas State got one to match the Hawks.
Rounding out the Top 10 was Sam Houston State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Stephen F. Austin and Saint Francis University, an identical top-10 to the coaches' poll.
Fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schools were also recognized. Norfolk State is ranked 15th while Bethune-Cookman is 20th. Delaware State and North Carolina A&T also received votes.
UMES returns five letter winners from last year's squad and adds a trio of highly decorated and seasoned newcomers. The eight-woman squad begins play under new head coach Kayla Bandy on November 1st at FDU's New Jersey Jamboree.
