BAXTER, PELAYO NAMED UMES PRMC ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—Freshmen men’s basketball player Hakeem Baxter (Philadelphia, Pa.) and bowler Sara Pelayo (Distrito Federal, Mexico) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on December 10th. This is the third award for Baxter and the second award for Pelayo.
Baxter, who was also named the MEAC Conference Rookie of the Week, registered a career high 28 points versus UMBC on Tuesday, which is the second best total by a UMES basketball player this season. The freshman went 9-for-19 from the floor and 9-for-10 from the foul line in 37 minutes of playing time, while also adding three rebounds, an assist and a steal. Hakeem has started every game this season and now leads all Hawks with an average of 17.2 points per game. He is also currently third on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game and tied for second with five steals on the year.
Pelayo led all Hawk bowlers as the team won all 10 matches at the MEAC Northern Division Tournament in Hampton, Va. this past weekend. In five individual games, Sara averaged 212 pins per game with a high score of 243 for a total pinfall of 1060. Pelayo is averaging 198.6 pins per game over the course of the season, good for second on the team. With the sweep this past weekend, the Hawks stand at 40-5 on the year.
Baxter and the men’s basketball team will travel to Corvallis, Ore. to face the Oregon State Beavers on Sunday, followed by a trip to West Lafayette, Ind. to play Perdue. Pelayo and the Hawk bowlers return to the lanes next year to compete at Kutztown Invite in Reading, Pa. on January 24-26.
