UMES EARNS BERTH IN MEAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced the eight-team field that will compete for the 2010 conference championship, held March 19-21 at the Gate City Lanes in Greensboro, N.C.
Delaware State University (DSU) secured the northern division's top spot with a 29-1 mark in MEAC play. UMES was second with a 23-7 mark, five of those losses coming to the Hornets. Hampton and Morgan State Universities round out the top four teams to make it the field from the northern division.
Despite being topped in league play, UMES is currently ranked no. 2 in the nation while DSU is no. 3. UMES currently posts a 45-15 overall record.
The Hornets (46-10) are the defending conference champions and dropped their only conference match to UMES in Baker games to go 14-1. They went 15-0 in team games. UMES was 11-4 in team games and 12-3 in Baker games.
Florida A&M won the MEAC's southern division with Norfolk State, Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State rounding out their top four teams.
Howard, Coppin State and North Carolina A&T failed to make the eight-team field.
The Championships start Friday, March 19 with a qualifying round to determine seeding. Teams will then compete in a second qualifying round with Baker games and then placed in a double-elimination bracket.
Play continues Saturday with teams competing in a best-of-seven Baker series. The Championships conclude on Sunday, March 21 beginning with the semifinal round and concluding with the championship final. Match times will be announced at a later date.
