Barbara S. Hicks is now in her fourth year as head softball coach for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks. Since coming on board August of 2000, Coach Hicks has added fall softball to the Lady Hawks softball program. Traditionally, the Lady Hawks only competed during the spring season.
Prior to comig to UMES, Coach Hicks served as head softball coach at Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. There at Hartwick, Hicks made three New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association appearances and coached two regional All-Americans. Coach Hicks specialized in recruiting and player development. She accumulated a 45-30-1 overall record for the 1998 and 1999 seasons. Coach Hicks served as an assistant coach for the Central Region softball team in the 2000 Empire State Games, where they won the Gold Medal. She assisted in the organization of try-outs, player selection, scheduling, and game management. Coach Hicks was also the softball chairperson for the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association for 1998-2000. Aside from coaching softball at Hartwick College, Hicks also served as an assistant field hockey coach and a Residence Hall director.
Hicks' coaching career began in 1990 with the Derry Township School District in Hershey, PA. From 1990-1992 Coach Hicks extended herself as a junior varsity softball coach, junior high school field hockey coach, and a junior high school basketball coach. She then moved on to serve as the assistant softball coach and assistant field hockey coach (1992-1993) for Mansfield University in Mansfield, PA. After her brief stay at Mansfield, Hicks then served one year as assistant softball coach for Cortland College in Cortland, NY. While at Cortland College, Coach Hicks also taught physical education and activity classes.
Coach Barbara Hicks has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, with a concentration in Math/Science from Lebanon Valley College. She is married to Gary Hicks and they have two children, Kelsey and Cooper. |
