Feb. 23, 2014
GREENSBORO, N.C. – On the final day of the North Carolina A&T Tournament, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team spilt the two games as they fell to conference rival, Morgan State University (MSU), 12-9, but defeated Rider University, 3-0.
In the first contest, the Lady Hawks scored nine runs on 11 hits, led by Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) going 3-of-4 with a game-high four RBIs while Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) recorded her third multi-hit game of the season.
Morgan State took an early lead, 2-0, until Maryland Eastern Shore scored seven unanswered runs to take the lead after two innings, 7-2. UMES had a comfortable lead into the fifth inning, 9-4, but the Lady Bears rallied as they scored five runs to tie the contest, 9-9. After both teams went scoreless in the sixth inning, MSU found their offensive rhythm as they scored three runs to reclaim the lead and defeated UMES, 12-9.
Zina Constancia led the Lady Bears’ comeback as she went 3-of-5 with a game-high four RBIs while Claudett Smith added three hits in the victory.
In nearly two months (04/26-04/27), these two teams will meet in a three-game series, located in Baltimore. Please visit www.umeshawks.com for times.
A couple hours later, UMES had to gear up to play Rider in a re-match from two days ago where Maryland Eastern Shore knocked off the Broncs, 15-6, for their first win of the season. Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) threw a gem as she picked up her first collegiate victory. Hitch pitched a complete game, allowing no runs, six hits, and three strikeouts in the win.
Maryland Eastern Shore pounced on the Broncs early as they scored the games’ first run on a homer by King, 1-0. In the top of the third, UMES created separation as they scored two more runs, including a lead-off triple from Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.). The Lady Hawks were unable to muster more runs, but a stellar pitching performance from Hitch propelled UMES to victory.
For the Broncs, Delany DeMello also tossed a complete game as she gave up three runs on eight hits while striking out four Lady Hawks in the loss.
This weekend (02/28-03/02), the Lady Hawks travel to Conway, S.C. to compete in the Coastal Carolina Invitational. Please visit www.umeshawks.com for times and opponents.
