Norfolk, VA - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (UMES) (1-3) grabbed their first win of the season today, taking a 1-0 decision from Morgan State University in the morning game of the final day of Bash at the Beach. They fell in the nightcap, 9-5 in extra innings. In a tournament that was scheduled to be three days and six games for the Lady Hawks it turned into four games on two days. UMES came away with a 1-3 record, dropping games one to Norfolk State 9-1 and game two to Delaware State 12-0. Christina Mason pitched all four games, moving to a 1-3 record. The Lady Hawks collected three hits in game one, scoring once. Shortstop Marlee Johnson went 2-3 with a run as Mason helped her team by recording the RBI. Jennifer Wilson recorded the only other hit. In game two on Friday against the Lady Hornets of Delaware State UEMS again managed just three hits, one form Johnson, one from Wilson, and one from Marnique Bailey in her first career at bat. Saturday was rained out but UMES took the field on Sunday morning with new energy. They played a great defensive game, getting a shut out from Mason who allowed only four hits and two walks, striking out seven. The Lady Hawks pounded out five hits scoring the game winner in the fourth inning. Lindsay Poss went 2-4 while Johnson was 1-2 with the run. Catcher Heather Patnode went 1-2 while senior Rena Bishop collected a hit going 1-3 in the game.
In game two the UMES bats came to life scoring five runs, four of which came in the sixth inning against the Lady Bison of Howard. Bishop and Wilson collected an RBI apiece as Latoya Bailey, Autumn Parson, Mason, Bishop, and Tiffany Dingle scored the runs. The game went into an extra eighth inning where Howard pounded out four runs to take the win, 9-5.
The Lady Hawks go to Philadelphia on Wednesday to take on LaSalle University at 2:00 pm. After that they head to Baltimore for the UMBC Retriever Invitational on March 12-14. Their first home contest will be against Morgan State on the 16th at 2:00 pm. |
