CCSU 4, UMES 3 | Fairleigh Dickinson 11, UMES 2 | Marist 11, UMES 3 | Rutgers 13, UMES 3

HAMPTON, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team started the weekend off strong, going into extra innings in their first game, but eventually dropped four games to Central Connecticut State (4-3), Fairleigh Dickinson (11-2), Marist (11-3) and Rutgers (13-3) at the Hampton Lady Pirates Tournament.

In Friday's contest against CCSU, the Lady Hawks scored two runs in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead with a double from junior McKenzie Davis (Salisbury, Md.), single from senior Ashley Johnson (Temple Hills, Md.) and RBI from freshman Amber Corrigan (Montgomery, N.Y.).

Freshman Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) hit her fourth home run of the season in the sixth inning before the Blue Devils responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 3-3. CCSU scored in the bottom of the eighth to take the game, 4-3.

Fairleigh Dickinson scored early and often in UMES' first game Saturday. The Lady Hawks were down, 6-0, in the bottom of the second inning before recording one run with an RBI from senior Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.).

Whitehurst was involved with the second run of the afternoon for UMES as she reached base on a double to right center and then scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 9-2 in favor of the Lady Knights. FDU scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to record the final of 11-2.

In the second game of the day, the Lady Hawks scored first over Marist, but it wasn't enough as the Red Foxes outscored UMES 11-3 in five innings.

Davis went 1-for-2 in the game with a run and double while freshman Lisa Bates (Blauvelt, N.Y.) socked her first home run of the season.

In a cloudy finale Sunday morning before the rain came, sophomore Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn't enough as Rutgers scored in every inning to take a 13-3 win over the Lady Hawks in five innings.

With the weekend sweep, UMES falls to 1-10 on the season.

The Lady Hawks travel to Norfolk, Va. next Saturday and Sunday for the Lady Spartan Classic and will take on Marist, St. Francis (Pa.), Delaware and Norfolk State.
