PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team fell in their home opener to Maryland Baltimore-County (UMBC) at Lady Hawks Field. In the first game, Maryland Eastern Shore lost, 7-4, while dropping the second contest, 13-0.

With both setbacks, UMES fell to 2-14 overall whereas the Retrievers improved to 11-3 on the season.

As a team, the Lady Hawks collected 11 hits, led by Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.), Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.), and Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) each recording two hits in the first game.

Trailing, 2-0, Maryland Eastern Shore cut into the deficit after Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) drove in Morgan King (Danville, Ill.), 2-1, In the top of the third, UMBC began creating separation as they scored three runs in the inning, 5-1, followed by an additional two in the fourth, 7-1. In the bottom fourth, two Retrievers’ errors gave the Lady Hawks life as they trimmed the deficit to four, 7-3. In their final at-bat, UMES added another run, but their rally fell short as they lost, 7-4.

In the first game, Maryland Baltimore-County notched 12 hits, led by Taylor Hall going 3-of-4 from the plate. Kaelin Jackson had a game-high three RBIs while Chelsea Bertoglio drive in two runs in the win.

In game two, the Lady Hawks could not find any rhythm offensively as they were held hitless by UMBC’s Kelly Lane. In Lane’s effort, she pitched a perfect game in five innings of work while striking out 10 UMES batters.

The Retrievers attacked Maryland Eastern Shore early as they scored five first inning runs, capped by a two-run blast from Hall over the leftfield fence, 5-0. In the top three, UMBC had a commanding lead, 7-0, and added insurance runs as they posted six more runs to win by the final score, 13-0.

Tomorrow (03/09), these two clubs will meet in a doubleheader at Lady Hawks Field, located in Princess Anne, Md. First-pitches are scheduled for noon and 2:00 p.m. (EST), respectively.
