March 09, 2008 ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball team split a pair of games at South Carolina State University (SCSU) in what was left of the Lady Bulldog Tournament hosted by SCSU. Inclement weather forced the cancellation of day one of the tournament but the team got on the diamond on Sunday as UMES fell to the host Bulldogs 6-0 but rebounded to top the Lady Eagles of Coppin State 14-4. In the Hawks' (1-5) last game of the day they picked up some much needed momentum, toping MEAC foe Coppin State (0-6) 14-4 in six innings. Mishayla Truttman picked up the win for UMES, throwing all six innings, allowing four runs, three earned, walking just one batter and striking out nine. On the other side Nichae Alston took the loss for CSU. She allowed 14 runs, only five of which were earned as the Eagles made seven errors. She struck out three batters. Offensively the Lady Hawks got the bats going. Dawnita Leigh scored three times, walking three times and recording a hit. Cassandra Carlos was 2-4 with a pair of runs and Kendra Saunders went 1-5 but had two runs and three RBI on her second home run of the season. Jaleesa Lewis went 1-3 but also scored three times. Marielle Garcia went 1-2 and plated a pair of runs (2 RBI) and crossed the plate twice. UMES posted runs in each inning, getting three each in the third and sixth innings. SCSU (2-12) posted runs in four of their six innings and shut out the Hawk offense in game two. They scored a lone run in the first, second and third inning and posted three in the fifth to pick up what would be, at the time, their first win of the year. Krystal Anthony and Emerald Freeman each recorded two hits in the game. Anthony also crossed home plate twice in the victory. TaTreka Polite got the win for the Bulldogs.
UMES managed just three hits in the game with those coming off the bats of Jaleesa Lewis, Ashley Taylor and Brooke Downey. Bonnie Heineken took the loss for the Lady Hawks, allowing all six runs, four of which were earned. The Lady Hawks return to the diamond on Tuesday when they host Delaware State in a make-up game starting at 1:00 p.m. The teams will play a double header. |
