Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Transfer Kristen Greenwood (Bel Air, MD/Catawba College) picked up her first career win as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team beat St. Francis (NY) in game four of the third annual UMBC Spring Classic. The Lady Hawks improve to 1-2 on the season, while the Terriers fall to 0-2.

The score was 0-0 at the end of the fourth inning but UMES broke open the game in the top of the fifth as they batted around and scored six runs to take a 6-0 lead. Junior Jenille Edwards (Ontario, Canada/St. Thomas Aquinas) and senior Autumn Parson (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown CC) began the inning with a double and a single, respectively. Ashley Jones (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) followed with an RBI single through the left side, scoring Edwards.

After a Latoya Bailey (Salisbury, MD/Bennett) walk, junior Heather Patnode (Jefferson, MD/Brunswick) singled to center to leave three on base for the Lady Hawks. Senior Jennifer Wilson (Princess Anne, MD/Washington) pushed UMES up 4-0, as she singled down the left lane to drive in runs by Parson and Jones.

Senior Marlee Johnson (Ontario, Canada/Newmarket) followed with a single up the middle to score Patnode and Wilson, giving the Lady Hawks a 6-0 lead after five innings.

St. Francis would not have the chance to get any closer as the game was called in the sixth inning due to inclement weather, sealing the win for UMES.

Greenwood (1-0) gets the victory for UMES while Serena Varvas (0-1) takes the loss for St. Francis.

The Lady Hawks will continue their play tomorrow at the third annual UMES Spring Classic with two games. UMES takes on Niagara at 11:30am and local rival UMBC at 3:30pm.
