PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – On a cloudy and rainy day, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team were swept in their doubleheader match-up against the University of Rhode Island (URI) at Lady Hawks Field, 5-1 and 6-1, respectively.

With both setbacks, the Lady Hawks dropped to 3-17 overall while URI improved to 3-10 on the season.

In the first game, Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) registered two hits, including a double, whereas Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) recorded the lone RBI in the contest for Maryland Eastern Shore.

After three innings of scoreless softball, the Rams took a 3-0 lead to break the tie, but UMES responded as Alston knocked in Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.) to bring the game within two, 3-1. The Lady Hawks kept the game close as they allowed no runs in the next two innings, but Rhode Island added two more runs in the top seven to win by the final score, 5-1.

For the Rams, Ashley Dumoulin threw a complete game (7.0 innings) while allowing one run on five hits and struck out two Lady Hawk batters.

In the second contest, Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) went a perfect 3-of-3 from the plate, including a double, while Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) notched a RBI in the loss.

Both teams were held scoreless after two until a three-run blast from URI’s Jocelyn Mattison gave the Rams an early lead, 3-0. Similar to the first game, the Lady Hawks answered with a RBI-single by Nash, driving in Hudson, to cut the deficit, 3-1. Rhode Island responded with two runs in the fourth, followed by another run in the fifth inning to win, 6-1.

In the second game, the Rams’ Mattison had two hits (2-of-3), including the third inning homer, whereas Taylor Archer and Marylynn Muldowney also recorded two hits in the win.

This Saturday (03/15), Maryland Eastern Shore begins a six-day road trip in Durham N.C. where they will face North Carolina Central University in a four-game series. First-pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. (EST)
