BALTIMORE, MD - After losing by one run to the Purples Eagles on Saturday, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team managed just two hits in a 14-1 Sunday loss to Niagara in the final day of the UMBC Classic. Purple Eagle starter Brooke Viola threw a two hitter with three strikeouts in five innings of work, while senior Christina Mason (Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada/Lakehead) supplied the only run for the Lady Hawks, scoring on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Kristen Greenwood (Bel Air, MD/Catawba). UMES is now 1-5, while Niagara improves to 3-1.

The Lady Hawks squandered some opportunities, leaving Maribeth Kulynycz (Princess Anne, MD/Holly Grove Christian) stranded at third in the fourth inning after she reached on a wild pitch, and Latoya Bailey (Salisbury, MD/Bennett), who reached on a walk, stranded at third in the next inning. The Purple Eagles, meanwhile, scored eight in the top of the first off of doubles by Amanda Baluch and Lisa Baker and RBI's by Baluch, Shannon Mongalise, Tory Healy, and Jamie Constantz.

Kristina Killian homered in the second inning, pushing the Niagara advantage to 9-0. The Purple Eagles added more five runs to take a 14-0 lead at the bottom of the third.

UMES responded with the only run for the Lady Hawks in the top of the fifth inning. Mason led off the inning with a single to left field and Bailey followed after reaching on a walk. Two batters later Greenwood popped to right field, scoring Mason but adding the second out for UMES. The Lady Hawks could not chip into the lead after that point, as Viola struck out the last batter to end the game.

Mason and Kulynycz each collected a hit for the Lady Hawks while Mongalise went 3 for 3 with two RBI for the Purple Eagles.
