BALTIMORE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team finished the Dawg Pound tournament with a 0-5 record after falling to Howard on March 12 in the seeded portion of the tournament at UMBC Field in Baltimore, Md.

Howard got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. With a runner on third, Nayrobi Nicholas doubled to plate Tracy Javier and put the Lady Bison ahead 1-0. HU put another run up when a single from Rischelle Charles scored Jennifer Bien-Aime. The Lady Bison opened the floodgates in the second inning when they notched nine runs on eight hits.

UMES put three runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. With runners on first and second, Kendra Saunders homered to left field to score Charlotte Ngondi and Jenille Edwards. But the Lady Hawk threat was not enough as Howard earned the 11-3 win.

Saunders went a perfect 2-2 in her at bats with one run and three RBI. Heather Patnode and Kristen Greenwood each picked up one hit for the maroon and gray while Ngondi and Edwards tabbed one run each.

On March 11, UMES fell in two games - a 10-0 loss to HU and a 9-0 loss to host UMBC.

In the first game, Howard started the scoring early, posting a run in the top of the first inning when a single from Fallon Jones scored Javier to put the Lady Bison up 1-0.

HU added three runs in the top of the second. With a runner on first, Javier doubled to score Candice Tatum. Nicholas singled to score Javier and extended the lead to 3-0. A Kristina Cordova single then scored Nicholas to put Howard ahead 4-0.

 

 

The Lady Bison added six more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the 10-0 win.

Ngondi and Edwards each collected a hit for UMES. Javier led HU with her 3-3 outing. She also had three runs and two RBI's.

In the second game on March 11, host UMBC scored in each inning, plating two in the first, four in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth.

Kali Shirk reached on an error to lead off the game and scored two batters later on a single to left field by Melanie Denischuk. Reilly Ward then singled home Stevie Shore, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

Ashlea Underwood homered to lead off the second inning. A batter later, Shirk reached on an error to drive in right fielder Michelle Olivieri, who had also reached on an error. Denischuk later singled Shirk home. Courtney O'Hara stole second base and scored when Dana Shepherd reached on an error.

Jessica Taylor and Amy Sadowl each singled to lead off the fourth inning. Taylor scored on O'Hara's sacrifice bunt, and Sadowl crossed the plate when Boyd reached on a two-out error.

Edwards and Latoya Bailey picked up one hit each for the Lady Hawks in the loss while Denischuk and Underwood each finished 2-2 for UMBC. Denischuk also drove in two runs.

On March 10, St. Francis (PA) earned an 11-0 win over the maroon and gray in five innings.

Kelly Slingwine's lead off single in the fourth inning broke up Greenwood's no-hit bid, and sparked a four-run rally for the Red Flash.

Slingwine later moved over to second after a sacrifice bunt by Richele Hall. Hilary McNelis delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded, while Jordanna Riggi and Erin Telford tallied back-to-back RBI singles to make it 4-0 for St. Francis.

The flood gates opened in the fifth inning with the Red Flash pounding out seven more runs on seven hits, including three home runs. Kara Stroup had a three-run homer while Nicole Bender and Kate Lancaster both had two-run blasts.

Saunders and Asia Scott collected one hit each for the Lady Hawks while Slingwine finished 3-4 with two runs for St. Francis. Hall and Stroup picked up two runs apiece for the Red Flash.

In the game against Vermont earlier that day, Aimee Kern pitched a two-hitter and stuck out 14 to lead the Catamounts to a 7-0 victory over UMES.

Vermont got on the board in the first inning when Kate Ramsey scored on a single by Whitney Borisenok. The Catamounts would add one in the second, two in the third and fifth, and wrapped up the scoring with a run in the sixth.

Saunders collected two hits for the maroon and gray that game. Borisenok went 3-4 with one run and two RBI's.
