Latoya Bailey had one run in the loss to Morgan State

HAMPTON, VA. - Jenille Edwards and Kendra Saunders had two hits apiece for UMES but it was not enough as the Lady Hawks fell in a 9-2 decision to Morgan State in the first game of the Hampton tournament.

The Lady Bears took an early lead in the first inning when Megan Jimenez and Veronica Brown crossed the plate, giving MSU the 2-0 advantage. Morgan State capitalized on two maroon and gray errors in the second inning and added four more runs on the board to push their lead to 6-0.

UMES (1-15, 0-5 MEAC) put up a run of their own in the bottom fourth when Kristen Greenwood's single sent Latoya Bailey across the plate. The Lady Hawks added another run in the fifth after a Saunders bunt sent Edwards home.

The Lady Bears tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth inning. UMES could not get their bats going in the bottom sixth, allowing MSU to take a 9-2 conference decision.

Saunders finished 2-3 with one RBI while Edwards went 2-4 with one run. Greenwood and Candace Tyler each picked up a hit for the maroon and gray while Bailey finished with one run and three walks. Greenwood also had on RBI.

The Lady Hawks will face Winston-Salem State at 3:00pm in their second game of the Hampton tournament.
