Baltimore, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball team (1-8) traveled to Tournament action over the weekend in Baltimore, MD hosted by the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). The Lady Hawks had some tough breaks in the tournament, dropping three games before withdrawing due to injuries. In game one UMES fell to St. Francis by a score of 8-4. Hits and errors were even in the game but the Red Flash got hits when it mattered, doubling up UMES. Latoya Bailey (2-3) and Marlee Johnson (2-4) each collected a pair of hits with both scoring a run. Pitcher Christina Mason (0-3), Lesley Aitkenhead (1-3), and Heather Patnode (0-3) all had an RBI with Patnode also scoring a run. Mason pitched a complete game six innings allowing eight runs, five earned and striking out five. In game two the Lady Hawks took on the host Retrievers who took out starter Mason with a ball off the thigh that left her unable to finish the game after 2 and 2/3 innings. UMES only managed three hits, Patnode, Mason, and Autumn Parson got those before falling 10-0. Several other players also were injured in the game. In game three, infielder Lesley Aitkenhead took the mound against eventual tournament runner-up Binghamton and allowed 15 earned runs off the hot bats of the Bearcats. The Lady Hawks again mustered three hits, Lindsay Poss, Jennifer Wilson, and Johnson each collected one. The final was 17-0.
UMES will have some time off to recuperate and will travel to College Park, MD to compete in the University of Maryland Tournament in the upcoming weekend. They will be competing against Brown University, Boston College, and the host Terrapins.
