College Park, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team dropped a pair in the Maryland Invitational opening day. They scored one run in game two to fall to the Brown Bears, 9-1. The first game the Lady Hawks were no-hit by the University of Maryland for a 9-0 win in five innings. Terrapin senior Liz Gall struck out a career-high 11 batters in the Terrapins' second no-hit effort of the season.

The Terrapins jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks in the first inning. Junior shortstop Nneka Cardoza led off the inning with a double and scored on freshman second baseman Keri Lounge's sacrifice fly. In the second inning, Maryland added two runs off catcher Rachel Greyson's first collegiate home run.

Maryland went up 6-0 in the third inning after scoring three runs on a Hawks error. In the fourth inning, Lounge's three-run blast, her fourth home run of the season, locked up Maryland's 9-0 win.

In addition to her no-hit performance, Gall contributed a double and scored a run in the victory.

Maryland started the tournament with a 3-2 loss to soon-to-be ACC conference competitor Boston College.

The Brown softball went 1-1 in the opening day of the University of Maryland Tournament, taking a 9-1 decision from the Lady Hawks to drop them to 0-2 on the day and 1-10 on the season.

UMES started out the game well getting a single from Marlee Johnson but then allowed four runs on five hits in the Brown first. In the second the Lady Hawks had something going when catcher Heather Patnode led-off with a single and was followed by a Chrissy Mason single that forced an error by the centerfielder to put Patnode on third and Mason on second. Autumn Parson then walked to load the bases with only one out. Unfortunately, UMES couldn't push a run across as Sarah Whitfield, who broke up the MD perfect game by drawing a walk, hit into a double play.

The Lady Hawks got two more hits in the third inning when Jen Wilson led-off with a double. She was out on a fielder's choice from Lindsay Poss which was followed by a Johnson single. No runs crossed that inning.

The lone UMES run came in the fifth inning when Patnode drew a two out walk to push Johnson to second, who had also reached on a walk. Tiffany Dingle would single up the middle, scoring Johnson and recording her first RBI of the season.

Brown would score one in the third and four more in the sixth to take the 9-1 victory.

UMES will continue play at the Maryland Invitational this Sunday at 10:00am against Boston College. Following the B.C. game, the Hawks will play in the tournament's consolation game at 2 p.m.
