College Park, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks softball team (1-11) allowed nine runs for the third game in a row, this time falling to the Maryland Invitational Champions, the Eagles of Boston College, by a score of 9-0. UMES collected four hits on the day, two coming from the hot bat of third baseman Lesley Aitkenhead, who was a perfect two for two at the plate. The Hawks got other hits from catcher Heather Patnode and outfielder Rena Bishop. The UMES defense was tough, stifling the Eagles until the third inning when three runs would cross on two hits and one Hawk error. In the fourth inning the bats of the Eagles erupted as they pushed six runs across on seven hits and another UMES error. Boston College batted around in the inning. Elena Ferrero was the hero in the game, hitting two for three, scoring a run and collecting four RBIs. Freshman pitcher Colleen Reiche helped her cause, hitting one for two, scoring a run, and plating a pair of Eagles. UMES was scheduled to play the host Terrapins in a consolation game at 2:00 pm but that game was cancelled due to a schedule change.
The Lady Hawks travel to Mount Saint Mary's on Tuesday to take on the in-state rival. That game is slated for a 2:00 pm first pitch in Emmittsburg.
