ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team wrapped  up their six-day road trip in Orangeburg, S.C. where they lost both games to the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State University (SCSU), 9-1 and 8-0, respectively, at Lady Bulldogs Softball Field.

With both setbacks today, the Lady Hawks went winless on the road trip (0-7) and moved to 3-24 overall whereas SCSU improved to 6-12 on the season.

UMES scored one run on three hits as they struggled offensively. Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) earned the lone RBI in the Game One loss.

Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) opened the contest with a triple into right center. With a runner in scoring position, Gomez hit a sacrifice fly to leftfield to bring in Alston and put the Lady Hawks on the board first, 1-0. Unfortunately, the early run would be the only offense Maryland Eastern Shore manufactured in the first game.

After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Bulldogs rallied off seven runs, including a three-run homer from SCSU’s freshman Jasmine Harris, and took a commanding lead, 7-1. South Carolina State added another run in the third, 8-1, and ended game one early after a solo home run from the Lady Bulldogs’ Mikala Johnson to win by the final score, 9-1.

For South Carolina State, Harris went 1-of-3, including the three-run shot, while Jasmine Greer drove in two RBIs in the game one victory.

In the second contest, Maryland Eastern Shore’s offensive woes continued as they were held to three hits. Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.), Abria Tinsley (Sewell, N.J.), and Rachel Vander Ven (Dover, Del.) each registered a hit in the Game Two setback.

The Lady Bulldogs scored the first two runs after a two-run blast from Harris to take an early lead, 2-0. In the next two innings, UMES miscues gave South Carolina State an opportunity to put additional runs on the scoreboard as they tallied six runs total in the second and three innings  and eventually won the contest by the final score, 8-0.

For SCSU, they were held to only five hits, led by Harris and Cianna Burke. Both Lady Bulldogs combined for five RBIs after going 4-of-6 from the plate.

Maryland Eastern Shore returns home to Lady Hawks Field to open conference play against the Lady Bison of Howard University in a three-game series. First-pitches are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday (03/22) whereas game-time for Sunday (03/23) is slated for noon (EST).
