HAMPTON, VA - UMES split a pair of games in the final day of the Hampton softball tournament on March 18. The Lady Hawks won their second game when they downed Winston-Salem State (WSSU) 3-1. UMES fell in their first game of the day, dropping an 18-6 decision to the host Pirates. In the game against WSSU, neither team was able to put runs on the scoreboard during the first two innings. Winston-Salem State finally put one on the board in the third when Elyon Taylor's center field single scored Lonnie Jones. UMES got two in the bottom of that inning to take the 2-1 lead. Jenille Edwards and Kendra Saunders scored the unearned runs for the maroon and gray when they each crossed the plate due to an error by the third baseman. Latoya Bailey's single in the sixth inning plated Edwards again. The Lady Rams were never able to overcome the deficit as UMES picked up their second consecutive win over WSSU. The Lady Hawks got nine hits compared to just five by Winston-Salem State. Edwards finished 3-4 with two runs while Saunders went 2-4. Bailey, Kristen Greenwood, Charlotte Ngondi and Christina Mason picked up one hit each. Bailey also collected one RBI. Taylor finished 2-3 for the Lady Rams. Mason picked up the win for the maroon and gray as she gave up just five hits and one walk in seven innings. Taylor got the loss for WSSU. In the game against Hampton, Tesara Liggins propelled the Lady Pirates with a three-run homer in the second and a two-run double in the seventh.
UMES got on board in the first inning when Ngondi crossed the plate for the maroon and gray. Saunders scored the second run of the inning thanks to an error by the shortstop. HU plated three runners in the second but the Lady Hawks responded with three runs of their own. Edwards blasted a home run to center field, scoring Mason and Asia Scott to even the score at 5-5. The Lady Pirates scored four more runs in the third inning to take a 9-5 lead. Hampton broke open the game with nine runs on 10 hits in the top of the seventh. UMES added one run in the bottom of the inning when a Saunders single plated Edwards but it would not be enough for the win. Edwards and Saunders each finished 2-4. Edwards also had two runs and three RBI's. Saunders finished with one run and one RBI while Ngondi, Mason and Scott picked up one run each for the maroon and gray. Liggins finished 5-6 for HU. She also had seven RBI's and four runs. UMES will look to get back on track when they take on Morgan State in a road decision on March 23 at 1:00 pm. |
