LADY HAWKS VICTORIOUS IN CONFERENCE HOME OPENER
March 22, 2014
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – After their six-day road trip, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team returned to Lady Hawks Field and won both conference home openers against the Lady Bison of Howard University, 6-3 and 7-2, respectively.
With both wins, UMES improved to 5-24 overall (2-0 MEAC) while Howard fell to 1-15 (0-2 MEAC) on the season. The victories also snapped a 10-game skid.
“Both wins were huge today,” said UMES Softball head coach Sam Douglas. “We needed to get off to a good start in conference play and we must continue to play this way in order to have an opportunity to compete for the MEAC Championship in May.”
In Game One, four Lady Hawks registered multi-hits as Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) went 2-of-3, including two doubles, while Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.), and Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) also notched two hits in the win.
After two innings of scoreless softball, the Lady Bison crossed the plate three times in the top of the third to take an early lead, 3-0. UMES responded in the bottom half of the inning as they scored three runs, including a two-out two-RBI double from Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.), and tied the contest, 3-3. Both teams were scoreless in the fourth, but Maryland Eastern Shore put together a late rally in the fifth.
After King opened the inning with a single, Howard miscues allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate, 4-3. Later in the inning, the Lady Hawks tabbed two more runs to win by the final score, 6-3.
For the Lady Bison, they tallied three runs on seven hits, led by Jasmine Gammons going 2-of-3 from the plate. Howard’s freshman pitcher Alex Flynn threw six innings, allowing six runs (all earned) and struck out four UMES batters in the loss.
In Game Two, Maryland Eastern Shore scored seven runs on eight hits, including multi-hit games from Anderson, Hitch, and Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.). Freshman Kelly Cullen (Fruitland, Md.) picked up her third win on the season after pitching a complete game. Cullen went seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and struck out one Lady Bison.
UMES jumped out to an early lead after King drove in Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.), 1-0. Howard battled back as a solo shot from Gammons made the contest deadlocked, 1-1, until the Lady Hawks exploded in the bottom second.
A lead-off standing double from Hitch put UMES in business. With one away and a runner on third, Anderson singled to leftfield, scoring Hitch, and put Maryland Eastern Shore back on top, 2-1. Next at-bat, Hudson doubled to leftfield, bringing home Anderson, forcing Howard to make a pitching change. Despite the move, the Lady Hawks tallied three more runs in the inning to take a commanding lead, 6-1.
After back-to-back scoreless innings in the third and fourth, the Lady Bison added a run in the fifth, 6-2, but Maryland Eastern Shore answered with Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) swiping home to take the second game, 7-2.
For Howard, they were held to only four hits in Game Two as Gammons and Imani Ballard were the lone Lady Bison to register RBIs in a losing effort.
Tomorrow (03/23), the Lady Hawks look to wrap-up their three-game series against Howard in a sweep at Lady Hawks Field. Game-time is booked for noon (EST).
