HAMPTON, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball team fell behind early and could never recover in a 14-1 five inning loss to host Hampton University in the Lady Pirates Tournament championship game on Saturday at Briarfield Park. After reaching the title game on the heels of solid hitting and pitching, UMES (7-14) managed just three hits whereas the Lady Pirates produced 10 of their own, leading to a 14 run outburst. The Lady Hawks also committed four errors compared to two by Hampton. Hampton capped off the inning on a Black RBI base hit to right center that drove in two and a Jennifer Cuellar single to score another and make it 14-0.
UMES finally got on board in the fifth inning after Carlos brought home a runner following an error by the shortstop with the bases full. However, Black would get out of the jam and the game would be called due to the mercy rule. Marielle Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), Carlos, and Truttman were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances throughout the tournament. Garcia went 2-0, giving up just one earned run, four hits, and striking out nine, while contributing two hits, two RBIs, and two runs on the offensive end.
