UMES SOFTBALL MANAGES JUST TWO HITS TO BUCKNELL, FALLS 9-0 & 8-0
March 25, 2006
Lewisburg, Pa. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks softball squad headed north to take on a non-conference foe in the Bison of Bucknell University. Unfortunately for UMES, the Bison pitching was dominant, allowing just one hit in each game of the double header as they topped the Hawks 9-0 and 8-0.
The following release appears compliments of the Bucknell Media Relations Office.
The Bucknell softball team opened its home schedule Saturday afternoon with a pair of one-hit shutout victories over Maryland Eastern Shore. The Bison won the opener 9-0 in five innings and followed with an 8-0 victory also in five innings in the second game.
Lauren Wible (Dover, Pa./Dover ) and Kris Devore (Washington, Pa./Trinity) led the Bucknell (5-17) offense in the doubleheader. Wible was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four runs batted in during the doubleheader, while Devore tallied two hits in each game and was 4-for-6 overall with three runs scored and four runs batted in. All four of Wible's RBIs came in the first game and helped move her into third place on Bucknell's career RBI list with 83.
Christie Wiest (2-6) (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley) started the first game and pitched the third shutout of her career and the first for the Bison this season. She did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and limited the Hawks to just that one hit, a double by Christina Mason. Mason was later gunned down by Wible trying to advance to third on a groundout by Kendra Saunders. Wiest, who struck out seven and walked just one, faced 16 hitters in five innings of work, one over the minimum.
Meg Muirhead (2-6) (Glendale, Calif./Flintridge Academy) also hurled a one-hitter in the second game. The left-hander yielded only a first-inning infield single to Jenille Edwards that Devore made a diving stop of at short. Muirhead, who after facing five batters in the first inning did not see more than four in an inning the rest of the way, walked just two hitters and struck out five in her five innings of work.
Bucknell's offense wasted little time getting on the board in the first game with four runs in the first inning and three more in the second. The Bison sent nine hitters to the plate in the first inning, and had three hits, but were also helped by two errors from the UMES defense.
Jennifer James (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led off the contest with a walk and advanced to third when Ashley Carlson (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached when third baseman Latoya Bailey threw the ball past the first baseman Edwards. Wible drove home James from third with a sacrifice fly for the first run of the game. The rest of the damage came with two outs.
Following a Lauren Litts (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg) fly out, Devore and Erin Curatola (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) had back-to-back singles with Devore's scoring Carlson. Cassie Lloyd (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) reached on a pop-up that was dropped by the second baseman, with Devore scoring on the play. Ashley Sarnecky (Wilmington, Del./Charter School) then laced a single into center to bring home Curatola with the final run of the inning.
The Bison sent seven hitters to the plate in each of the next two innings and scored a combined five runs. Wible, Litts and Devore, who were the 3-4-5 hitters in the lineup, pounded three consecutive extra-base hits and knocked in one run each time in the second inning. Wible hit a long double to center, while Litts and Devore crushed stand-up triples to right-center.
Four of Bucknell's first five hitters in the third inning reached, highlighted by a leadoff triple from Sarnecky. Wible drove home two more runs with a single into center to give the Bison their final 9-0 margin.
Despite not scoring in the fourth inning, Bucknell still put pressure on UMES (3-18) starter Kristen Greenwood (1-10) with Sarnecky recording her third hit of the contest and Ashley Beans (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) walking with two outs.
Greenwood gave up 11 hits and all nine runs, although just five were earned due to three Hawks' errors, in four innings. She struck out just one and walked two.
The Bison used the same formula of scoring early and often in the second game with five runs in the first and three in the second. Bucknell sent 11 hitters to the plate in the first inning and totaled five singles and three walks off UMES starter Christina Mason (2-8). Devore, who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three runs batted in during the second game, was one of three Bison to register RBI singles in the first inning. Her RBI single came after falling behind in the count 0-2 and fouling off a number of pitches. Meghan Feller (Willoughby Hills, Ohio/Notre Dame) and Heather Haskin (Noblesville, Ind./Thomas Scecina), neither of whom appeared in the first game, also recorded first-inning RBI singles. Feller was 2-for-3 in the game with one run scored and two runs batted in.
Wible and Devore again played a part in the second-inning rally. Wible drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a wild pitch by Mason. She advanced to third on an infield single by Curatola. Devore then brought both Wible and Curatola home with another triple to deep right-center field. Feller then laid a perfect bunt down the third base line to score Devore as well as reach first base with a single.
Following Feller's bunt, Mason settled down and retired nine of the final 10 hitters with only Damara Farkas (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) reaching base on an error by the shortstop.
Overall in the doubleheader, Bucknell scored its 17 runs on 19 hits with five of those going for extra bases. Of the extra-base hits, four were triples, including two off the bat of Devore.
