GURROLA CLUBS FIRST HOMER OF YEAR IN LOSS TO BISON
March 25, 2012
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Junior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) was 3-for-3 from the plate and hit the Hawks' first homer of the year, but it was not enough as the women lost to Howard University, 12-8, on Sunday afternoon at Hawks Field. With the loss, Howard sweeps the regular season series between the two clubs. The game saw a total of 15 errors committed altogether.
For the second consecutive game, UMES (0-19, 0-5 MEAC) was in it until the final stages, as the Hawks rallied to bring the game to within one. With Howard holding a 9-8 lead in the sixth, UMES sent the winning run to the plate with one away. The tying run was on third as well, but the Hawks saw their next two hitters retire in order. The thwarted rally was responded with three runs by the visitors in the seventh to send Howard to its third straight win.
After holding the Bison scoreless in the top half of the first, UMES took the advantage with a single tally later that inning. With two away, Gurrola swatted her first round-tripper of the year to give UMES the 1-0 lead. The lead proved to be short lived when Howard (5-19, 3-3 MEAC) put an eight spot up in the second.
The Hawks brought the game to within two with a six-run fourth and a two-run fifth.
UMES jumped all over Howard reliever Ashley Turner in the third when freshman Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) doubled home a pair. King later came around to score, but Lawrence re-entered the game as a pitcher and shutdown the Hawk threat. With one away in the fouth, Gurrola singled in sophomore Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center by King.
The contest saw a scoreless fifth, before Howard notched a solo run in the sixth. UMES brought the Bison advantage to one run in the sixth. Junior Kristen Lee (Bowie, Md.) doubled and later scored on an RBI single by Gurrola, who came around a short time later on an error by the HU's catcher. It was as close as the Hawks would get, as HU notched three in the seventh to take the win.
UMES was paced by the three RBI performances of Gurrola and King, while drawing eight free passes and seeing four players collect hits. Gurrola threw all seven innings and gave up 12 runs (nine earned), while striking out four and walking one.
Howard's Dominique Lawrence earned her second win in as many days with ten strikeouts in six innings. Jenny Ly was a standout with the bat for Howard, as she went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, while four others scored at least twice.
The Hawks are next set to play on Saturday, March 31 when they travel to Coppin State University for a double dip beginning at 1 p.m.
