BLUE HENS FLY OVER LADY HAWKS
April 2, 2014
NEWARK, Del. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team were swept in their non-conference doubleheader matchup versus the University of Delaware (UD) at Delaware Softball Diamond, 23-2 and 5-0, respectively.
With both losses, the Lady Hawks fell to 6-28 overall while UD improved to 12-16 on the season.
In Game One, Maryland Eastern Shore scored twice on three hits as New Jersey-natives Chelsea Alston (Matawan) and Vanessa Gomez (Belleville) were the only two Lady Hawks to cross home plate. Sophomore Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) earned the lone RBI in the Game One loss.
UMES attacked early as Alston singled to right-field, followed by a walk from Gomez. Next at-bat, junior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) took a pitch and loaded the bases. With bases loaded and no outs, Diseroad grounded out to third base, driving in the first run of the game, 1-0. A throwing error by the Blue Hens added another run to give UMES an early lead, 2-0, but the Lady Hawks’ lead was short-lived.
In the bottom half of the first, Delaware answered with four runs to take the lead, 4-2. Next inning, UD scored three runs to take a commanding lead, 7-2. In the third, the Lady Hawks found themselves in a double-digit deficit as the Blue Hens tallied 11 runs in the inning, 18-2. Delaware’s offensive explosion continued as they posted five additional runs in the fourth to win by the final score, 23-2.
UD recorded 23 runs on 20 hits, led by Shelby Jones going a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate, including a grand-slam in the third inning. Carolyn Szymanski held the Hawk attack to two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out five Lady Hawks in the Game One victory.
In the second contest, UMES collected five hits and were held scoreless in seven-innings of action. Despite the outcome, sophomore Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) threw five innings while allowing one run and four hits as a reliever.
After a scoreless first inning, the Blue Hens rallied off four runs to take an early lead, 4-0. Hitch and the Lady Hawks kept the contest close, but were unable to breakthrough offensively as they fell, 5-0.
For Delaware, Jones and Michelle McKinnon each registered two RBIs while Kelly Lupton struck out six UMES players in the Game Two win.
This weekend (04/05-04/06), the Lady Hawks return home to resume conference play against Norfolk State University (NSU). First-pitches are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (EST), respectively.
