Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks (1-24) dropped a pair of games today to the Lady Eagles of Coppin State College (CSC) by scores of 2-0 and 6-1. Game one was a pitcher's duel between Cristina Mason of the Lady Hawks and Jamie Imhof of Coppin State. Imhoff recorded 15 strikeouts in the win, going a complete game, seven innings, issuing only one walk and no runs. Mason was on her game as well. In seven innings she walked two, struck out ten and allowed five hits and two runs. Those two runs came in the fifth inning when Jenny Harrell singled to left. She scored after Christina Glascoe tripled to right center. Glascoe then scored when a two out double by Missy Bell plated her. That was enough to give CSC the win. The Lady Hawks only had two hits on the day, one coming from Lindsay Poss and another off the bat of Lesley Aitkenhead who also drew the only walk. In game two UMES took the early lead in the first inning. Poss led off with a single and advanced to third one batter later as Rena Bishop attempted to sacrifice her over and did, but reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Poss then scored when Aitkenhead attempted to suicide squeeze her home. She also reached base on a throwing error, this one by the pitcher Imhoff. That was the only run UMES could plate as the Lady Eagles tied it in the second and took the 2-1 lead in third. UMES was still in it but in the fifth inning Coppin State plated four runs, one coming from an Imhof single and three RBIs on a home run to center field by Elisha Carter.
Poss went two for four in game two, while Marlee Johnson was one for three with a double. Sarah Whitfield also recorded a double in the Lady Hawk's only other hit.
Mason took the loss while Imhoff got both wins and Ajaye Pope picked up the save in game two. UMES hosts Delaware State on Tuesday in MEAC action at Hawk's Field beginning at 2:00 pm. |
