April 5, 2005
PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The UMES softball team played Delaware State tough but were swept in a conference doubleheader against the Lady Hornets, 9-1 and 1-0, Monday afternoon at The Hornets Nest. With the two losses, the Lady Hawks fall to 3-17, 2-6 MEAC while Delaware State improves to 18-14, 6-0 MEAC.
In the first game, the Lady Hornets scored three runs in the second inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Junior Jenille Edwards (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) got her second hit of the game in the top of the third, an RBI double that scored Danielle White (Westover, MD/Washington) and pulled UMES within two of the lead.
Delaware State opened the floodgates at the bottom of the inning, scoring six runs (four unearned) on five hits to go up 9-1 after three.
Senior Ashley Jones (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) singled to get on base for the Lady Hawks in the fourth, but it was not enough as the Lady Hornets walked away with the 9-1 victory. Edwards went 2-2 with one RBI while Jones collected a hit in the loss.
UMES held Delaware State to just three hits in the nightcap, but the Lady Hornets scored the game's only run in the fourth inning off of an error by shortstop Marlee Johnson (Stouffville, Ontario/Newmarket).
The Lady Hawks fought back in the seventh, as sophomore Latoya Bailey (Salisbury, MD/Bennett) led off the inning with a single. However the effort was short lived, as she was put out at third on a game-ending double play. Bailey and Edwards each went 1-3 in the outing, while Shannon Sams finished 2-3.
UMES is back in action on Wednesday, April 6 when they travel to Washington DC to face off against Howard in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00pm.
