PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Kendra Saunders hit back to back home runs in the second game of the doubleheader against Norfolk State on Wednesday, but it would not be enough as UMES fell 4-2 in a windy non-conference contest at Hawks Field. The Lady Hawks dropped the first game 15-0. Saunders, who ranks first on the team with her .414 batting average, scored all of UMES' runs in the second game when she smacked back-to-back home runs off of NSU's Micki Rodriguez. The maroon and gray got just four hits in that decision, however, with Saunders accounting for three of those hits. Junior Latoya Bailey picked up the other hit for the Lady Hawks with her double to left field in the sixth inning. Norfolk State (11-18) capitalized on several Hawk miscues in the first inning when they scored three runs on four errors. Hitomi Greene's double to left field allowed Priscilla Weidner to score while Allison Greene crossed the plate due to an error by left fielder Candace Tyler. H. Greene was plated later that inning as Rodriguez reached on an error by Saunders. NSU put up another run in the fourth when A. Greene's single plated Leekycia Brown. Saunders got UMES (3-24) on board in the bottom first when she blasted one to center field. The freshman from Ontario, Canada smacked another one home in the bottom fourth to lead off the inning. She finished the game 3-3 with two RBI's and two runs while Bailey went 1-3. H. Greene and Ashley Archer each finished 2-4 for the Spartans while Brown went 2-3. The Lady Hawks were out hit 13-2 in the first game and committed a season high nine errors in the 15-0 shutout by NSU. Norfolk State put up five runs in the second inning when Rodriguez and Katie Byrne each scored as Cassandra Petway reached on an error by first baseman Christina Mason. Weidner's center field double plated Petway and Brown while A. Greene sent Weidner home with her double to right field.
The Spartans put up six runs in the third and plated three more in the fourth to take a 14-0 lead. Byrne's fifth inning single plated Jennifer Morrison and gave NSU the 15-0 advantage. Saunders picked up a hit for UMES with her right field single in the first inning. Tyler singled in the fifth for the maroon and gray's second hit of the game. Byrne went 3-4 with three runs and three RBI's while Rodriguez and Brown each went 2-3. The Lady Hawks will hit the road for their next five games when they battle the MEAC south teams in the conference roundup, April 7-9 in Lexington, South Carolina. |
