LADY HAWKS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER VERSUS SPARTANS
April 5, 2014
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team returned to Lady Hawks Field and split their conference doubleheader against Norfolk State University (NSU). UMES won the first contest, 6-3, to give the Spartans their first MEAC loss of the season; however, fell short in the second game, 5-2.
At the end of the day, Maryland Eastern Shore moved to 7-29 overall (4-3 MEAC) while the Spartans went to 12-16 (6-1 MEAC) on the season.
In Game One, the Lady Hawks tallied six runs on eight hits, led by senior Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) going 2-for-4 with two triples. Sophomores Abria Tinsley (Sewell, N.J.) and Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) held NSU to three runs (two earned) on six hits. Tinsley picked up her second win of the season while Hitch earned her first-career save in a reserve role.
Norfolk State scored two first-inning runs, including a solo homer from Kayla McNair, to take an early advantage, 2-0. In the bottom second, the Lady Hawks capitalized on the Spartan’s errors as they rallied four runs and took their first lead of the game, 4-2. Next inning, back-to-back lead-off singles by freshman Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.) and sophomore Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.), followed by a sacrifice fly from Hitch had runners into scoring position. Next at-bat, sophomore Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) grounded out to shortstop to drive in Hudson and extended their lead, 5-2.
The Spartans answered with a run in the fourth to cut into the deficit, 5-3, but Maryland Eastern Shore mustered up another run in the six as a RBI-triple down the right-field line by Alston drove in freshman Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.). In the final inning, Hitch came in to pick-up the save as the Lady Hawks won, 6-3.
For NSU, McNair went a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate, including a first-inning home run, while Mikki Haury and Robyn Mitchell each registered a RBI in the Game One loss.
In Game Two, UMES recorded two runs on seven hits, led by Hudson going 3-for-4 with a triple and run scored. Maryland Eastern Shore also walked seven times in the game, including a hit-by-pitch. Nash and Schnyder each logged two walks in the Game Two loss.
Similar to Game One, the Spartans took an early lead after a sac fly from McNair drove in Morgan Boyd, 1-0. After back-to-back scoreless innings in the second and third, NSU tabbed on another run, 2-0. In the bottom fourth, UMES was able to take advantage of more Spartan miscues as they tallied two runs and tied the game, 2-2. Both pitchers, Maryland Eastern Shore’s Hitch and Norfolk State’s Jamie Schulle, kept their respective clubs in the contest as they did not allow any runs in the following three innings, forcing extra innings. In the top of the eighth, the Spartans broke through to score three runs and won, 5-2.
For Norfolk State, they collected five runs on 11 hits. McNair and Whitney Williams each registered two hits while Schulle pitched a complete game as she tossed all eight innings, allowing two runs (no earned) on seven hits and struck out three Lady Hawks in the Game Two victory.
Tomorrow (04/06), both squads wrap-up the season-series in the all-important rubber-match at Lady Hawks Field in Princess Anne, Md. First-pitch is set for noon (EST).
