PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon, as the Hawks were unable to hold down a potent Norfolk State offense. The Hawks fell 8-0 in the first game, before losing 10-0 in the nightcap.

UMES (0-25, 0-10 MEAC) was unable to produce much offense in the first game, where Norfolk State’s Jamie Schulle allowed just four hits and fanned 12 over five innings. Junior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) collected two hits, while Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) and CyAnna Scott (Baltimore, Md.) each had one.

The Hawks fell behind 4-0 after three innings, but a four-run fourth by Norfolk State (14-17, 5-2 MEAC) proved to be the difference.

In game two, the UMES offense managed just a pair of hits. The team was led by the single hits of Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) and sophomore Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.). Liz Reilly threw five scoreless innings and struck out four to pick up the win. Haley Ward led the Spartan offense with four hits, while four other NSU players had two RBIs.

The Hawks look to post their first win of the season, tomorrow, April 6 with a matchup against Norfolk State. The win will be the final matchup against the Spartans in the regular season.
