PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – A day after splitting their doubleheader with Norfolk State University (NSU), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) lost the rubber match to the Spartans, 7-4, at Lady Hawks Field. NSU takes the season-series, 2-1, over the Lady Hawks.

With the setback, Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 7-30 overall (4-4 MEAC) while the Spartans improved to 13-16 (7-1 MEAC) on the season.

Sophomore Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) led the Hawk attack as she went 3-of-4 with two RBIs whereas fellow sophomores Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) and Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) each registered multi-hit performances in a losing effort.

Scoreless after the first inning, NSU’s Whitney Williams bombed a solo shot over the left-center fence to put the Spartans on the board, 1-0. Both teams went scoreless in the third, but Norfolk State created separation as they tallied four runs in the fourth and took a commanding lead, 5-0.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Diseroad singled up-the-middle, followed by junior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) drilling a shot to right-centerfield. With one away and runners in scoring position, Diseroad stole home to put UMES on the board, 5-1. At-bat, Nash delivered with a RBI-single to drive home King, 5-2.

After the Spartans answered with a run in the fifth, 6-2, freshman Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.) tripled off the leftfield fence to give UMES a runner in striking distance. Norfolk State’s Stephanie Wheatley threw a wild pitch, scoring Hudson, and trimmed the deficit, 6-3.

After a scoreless six inning, the Spartans tabbed onto their lead as Williams homered over the right-centerfield, 7-3. In their final at-bat, the Lady Hawks battled as Nash drove in King for her second RBI on the day. UMES late rally fell short as they lost, 7-4.

For NSU, they recorded seven runs on 13 hits, led by Williams going a perfect 4-of-4 including two homers and a double. Senior Morgan Boyd batted 3-of-4 from the plate while junior Robyn Mitchell notched two RBIs in the win.

Maryland Eastern Shore returns to the diamond in 12 days as they travel to Hampton, Va. to face the Lady Pirates of Hampton University in a three-game series. Saturday’s doubleheader will be televised on ESPNU/ESPN3, starting at 1:00 p.m. (EST). Sunday’s single-seven inning contest takes place at noon (EST).
