UMES SHUTOUT BY GEORGE MASON IN DOUBLEHEADER
April 7, 2010
FAIRFAX, Va. - Becky Anderson pitched a one-hit shutout while teammate Miranda Cranford threw a two-hit shutout to carry the George Mason softball team over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore to a tune of 8-0 in both games of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at George Mason Field.
The Lady Hawks held the Patriots to just one hit and no runs in the first two innings of the first game before they scored four runs on four hits in the third inning.
George Mason doubled their runs in the fourth inning on three hits to go up, 8-0.
Anderson looked to have a no-hitter in the bags with two outs in the top of the fifth inning before freshman Shanice Crowder (Baltimore, Md.) singled to the third baseman in her lone at-bat of the game. The Lady Hawks were unable to get a rally going as sophomore Britney McLeod (Palmyra, N.J.), who was pinch-running for Crowder, was caught stealing to end the game.
In the second game of the afternoon, UMES received a hit in the first inning as senior Ashley Johnson (Temple Hills, Md.) singled to the shortstop.
Cranford pitched a perfect second inning and was looking to make it a perfect third before junior Inde Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled to right field. Whitehurst was stranded when junior Chelsea Logan (Trenton, N.J.) flied out to centerfield to end the inning. Cranford finished up the game, pitching a perfect fourth and fifth innings.
The Patriots scored two runs in the third and fourth innings and three in the bottom of the fifth to implement the run rule, winning the second game, 8-0.
With the losses, UMES moves to 1-17 on the season while George Mason improves to 10-16.
The Lady Hawks travel to Delaware State this weekend for a conference doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
