EASTON, PA - Senior Autumn Parson hit a three run homer in the second contest against Lafayette, but it was not enough as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team lost their non-conference doubleheader against the Leopards, 8-0 and 9-3, Wednesday afternoon at Easton, PA. Kristen Ruckno and Jill Masterton got the offense started for Lafayette (7-26) in the top of the first, as Masterton followed Ruckno's double to left with a triple to right, and later scored on a ground out to give the Leopards a 2-0 lead. Lafayette used two hits, a pair of errors, a walk and a wild pitch to score five in the third. Kathryn Longshore had a two RBI single in the frame as the Leopards sent all nine batters to the plate. The game was called in the fifth inning after Megan Averbach scored the game clinching run off of a wild pitch. Lafayette took advantage of the UMES miscues (5-23) in the nightcap, outscoring the Lady Hawks 8-0 in the first two innings as pitcher Maribeth Kulynycz gave up nine walks and hit two batters. Senior Marlee Johnson came on in relief for UMES at the bottom of the inning and gave up just one hit and an unearned run the rest of the way. The Lady Hawks got on board in the fourth inning, as Parson smacked a three-run homer to left field, scoring Jenille Edwards and Jennifer Wilson to close within six runs of the Leopards. Parson added another hit in the sixth but was left stranded when Latoya Bailey, who reached on an error, was called out at second as Tiffany Dingle reached on a fielder's choice. UMES gave one last effort at the top of the seventh inning, as junior Heather Patnode got on base off of an error and Johnson singled to get her second hit of the game with no outs. But the Lady Hawks could not convert, as the next three batters went down in order to seal the win for Lafayette.
Johnson went 3-7 on the day, while Parson finished 2-5 including one run and three RBI. Edwards had a 2-3 outing with a run, while Wilson also added a run with a 2-6 outing on the day. UMES will return to MEAC play on April 14, hosting Morgan State in a doubleheader at Hawks Field beginning at 3 p.m. |
