LEXINGTON, S.C. - Kendra Saunders and Mishayla Truttman each had two-run home runs against Bethune-Cookman (BCU) but UMES fell just short against the Wildcats, 5-4, on the second day of the MEAC Softball Roundup. The Lady Hawks later fell in a 12-1 decision against Florida A&M (FAMU).

BCU took a 3-0 lead in the third inning before Saunders closed UMES (2-22, 0-8 MEAC) within a run of the Wildcats in the fourth. The sophomore from Mississauga, Canada hit a deep left field home run to plate her and Jaleesa Lewis, who reached base via walk earlier that inning.

Bethune-Cookman capitalized on a pair of Hawk errors to score a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Hawks tied things up in the sixth when Truttman hit her second home run of the year, a two run bomb that sent her and Tiana Strother across the plate.

Good pitching and good fielding helped UMES stave off a BCU run in the bottom of the sixth but the Lady Hawks could not get their bats going in the seventh. Shaterra Davis drove in the game winning for the Wildcats after her base hit up the middle scored Holley Bussey.

Saunders and Truttman each finished 1-3 with one run and two RBI. Strother went 1-3 with one run while Lewis added a run. Bussey went 2-4 with two runs and one RBI for Bethune-Cookman.

The Lady Rattlers out hit the maroon and gray 13-3 in the second decision of the day. Kristen Greenwood's right field single plated Brooke Downey in the first inning and gave the Hawks an early 1-0 lead, but Florida A&M responded with four runs of its own in the bottom of that stanza.

FAMU took an 8-1 lead after scattering four runs in the next two innings. The Lady Rattlers sealed its win in the fourth after scoring four runs on five hits.

Truttman went a perfect 2-2 that decision while Greenwood also picked up a hit for UMES. Rihanna Green paced FAMU with a 3-4 outing to go along with one run and one RBI.

The Lady Hawks will play its final two games of the Roundup tomorrow when they take on Norfolk State and North Carolina A&T at 10:00am and 2:00pm, respectively.
