HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team fell to Hampton University in their Friday doubleheader, 7-0 and 4-2, respectively, as both contests were televised on ESPNU.

“It was a great opportunity for our ladies to demonstrate their skills on ESPNU,” said UMES Softball head coach Sam Douglas. “Despite the outcome, our ladies put forth great effort and represented our institution proudly. This is a moment they will never forget.”

With both setbacks, the Lady Hawks dropped to 7-32 overall (4-6 MEAC) while Hampton moved to 18-18 (8-3 MEAC) on the season.

The Hawk attack was unable to find any offensive rhythm as they were held to one hit. Freshman Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) recorded the lone hit for the Lady Hawks in Game One. In relief, sophomore Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) tossed 4.2 innings and allowed one earned run on three hits in the loss.

UMES trailed, 1-0, after the first inning until Margaret Wilkins delivered a grand slam over the left centerfield fence to take a commanding lead, 5-0. Offensively, Maryland Eastern Shore ran into a buzz saw as Hampton’s Jailynn Jackson held the Lady Hawks without a hit until Schnyder opened the sixth with a lead-off single up-the-middle, ending the no-hitter. The Lady Pirates won Game One, 7-0.

In Game Two, Maryland Eastern Shore battled back as they registered two runs on seven hits, led by Schnyder going a perfect 2-for-2 with a RBI. Hitch and freshman Kelly Cullen (Fruitland, Md.) each threw three innings in a losing effort.

After a scoreless first inning, UMES tallied two runs in the second to take the lead, 2-0. Hampton answered in the third by scoring two runs of their own and tied the contest, 2-2. In the next inning, the Lady Pirates took the lead and won by the final score, 4-2.

For Hampton, Taylor McCoy and Kerissa Burruel each notched two hits while Jecholia Pratt pitched a complete game as she went seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits.

Tomorrow (04/19), both clubs will wrap-up the three-game series at 1:00 p.m. (EST).
