LADY HAWKS LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT TO HAMPTON

HAMPTON, Va. – Despite a valiant effort, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team comeback fell short as they lost to Hampton University at Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, 9-7. As a result, Hampton sweeps the season-series, 3-0.
With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 7-33 overall (4-7 MEAC) while Hampton improved to 19-18 (9-3 MEAC) on the season.
For Maryland Eastern Shore, they manufactured seven runs on eight hits. Sophomore Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) went 2-of-3 with three RBIs. Freshman Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) batted in the six spot for the Lady Hawks and recorded two singles in the loss.
UMES jumped out to an early lead as they tallied three runs in their first at-bat, 3-0. The Lady Pirates scored a run in the first, followed by a two-run shot from Hampton’s Danielle Backus and tied the contest, 3-3, after two innings of play.
In the fourth, Maryland Eastern Shore rallied another three runs as sophomore Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) delivered a two-out RBI-double to left centerfield, scoring freshman Kelly Cullen (Fruitland, Md.), and jump started the Hawk attack, 6-3.
In Hampton’s at-bat, they took their first lead of the game by scoring five runs, 8-6, in the bottom fourth. The Lady Pirates notched an insurance run in the six to push the lead to three, 9-6.
In their final at-bat, the Lady Hawks refused to go down without a fight as freshman Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.) crossed home plate for the third time on the day in the seventh to trim the deficit, but UMES’ comeback fell short, 9-7.
Other notable Hawk performances included Gomez and Hudson combining to score five times while Cullen came in relief and tossed 2.2 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits in a losing effort.
For Hampton, Backus batted 2-of-4, including a homer, while driving in four runs. Kayla Deschepper went a perfect 2-of-2 with two RBIs while Jailynn Jackson pitched a complete game in the win.
This Wednesday (04/23), Maryland Eastern Shore wraps up their non-conference schedule as they travel to Fairfax, Va. to face the Patriots of George Mason University in a doubleheader. Both contests are slated for 2:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively.
