HAMPTON, Va. - For the first time in two weeks, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team was in action, but the Hawks would drop a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games to Hampton University. The Hawks collected seven hits in the two matches.

UMES (0-27, 0-11 MEAC) fell behind early in the first contest to Hampton (18-26, 6-4 MEAC). The Pirates opened the game with a single tally in the first, before the game went scoreless until the third. HU scored three in the third to take a 4-0 lead. The deficit for the Hawks grew to five in the fifth, but UMES rallied to bring the game close in their last at bat.

With two away, freshman Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) reached on an error to start the rally. Junior Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J) followed with a walk, before sophomore Jade Nelson (Lithonia, Ga.) singled home the pair with a shot to right field. The runs were as close as the Hawks would get, as the HU retired the following UMES hitter to thwart the rally.

The second contest featured a scoreless game across the first two innings. Hampton scored two in the third to take the early lead, but the Hawks would come crawling back. James doubled to open the inning and with one away, scored on an RBI single by junior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif).

The 2-1 scored did not last for long when the Pirates added onto their lead with a three run fourth. UMES would give up another three spot in the fifth and one in the sixth to conclude the contest.

UMES looks to get in the win column when the Hawks conclude the regular-season series against the Pirates on Sunday, April 22 at 1 p.m.
