Princess Anne, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) staged a dramatic ten inning win today to defeat Saint Francis College (N.Y.) (SFC) 5-4 in ten innings at Lady Hawks Field. They collected ten hits, including five from the bat of Jenille Edwards who was perfect in the game, adding a run and two RBIs. In a fitting end senior Christina Mason got the complete game win throwing ten innings, allowing nine hits, four runs, three earned, three walks and striking out seven. It was fellow senior Tiffany Dingle who crossed the plate with the winning run. Following tie-breaker procedure Dingle started the inning at second base. Heather Patnode went to sacrifice her over to third but it was a fielder's choice and both were safe. SFC (2-37) decided to intentionally walk lead off-hitter and senior Marlee Johnson who had recorded two hits in the game. With the bases loaded it wasn't a senior, but a freshman, in the form of Maribeth Kulynycz, who dropped a blooper over the first baseman's head into right field to score Dingle and secure the 5-4 win. UMES (8-30) trailed early by two runs when the Terriers scored both in the second inning on three hits. Kristina Poore led-off the inning with a double to left. With one out Juliana Endo doubled to left center scoring Poore. Endo then scored when Mikka Vrankovich singled through the left side. The Hawks took the lead in the third as Johnson hit a one out double to left center and went to third on a Kulynycz single. After stealing second she went to third and Johnson scored as Edward hit a single to center. After Edwards stole second a wild pitch was thrown and she went to third as Kulynycz scored. Edwards would score as senior Autumn Parson grounded out to short. UMES led 3-2.
The Terriers tied the game in the fifth inning when Jen Campuzano dropped down a suicide squeeze, scoring Nicole Adisano. The two teams would play scoreless through the seventh inning and head to extra innings where SFC would strike first. They added one run in the eighth inning when Janine Valentin would score on a wild pitch after moving to third when Poore reached on an error. In the bottom of the eight it looked as if UMES would drop game two as Patnode popped out and Dingle would be tagged out after being placed on second base. Johnson was on base from a fielder's choice an went to second when Kulynycz reached on error by the shortstop. The Hawks were still alive. Edwards then singled to left and drove home Johnson and the game was tied again. UMES won in the tenth in their final home game of the season. The same could not be said in game one where the Hawks allowed seven runs and only scored two. They both came in the first inning after Kulynycz singled through the left side and then moved to third when Edwards doubled down the left field line. Kulnynycz scored on senior Jennifer Wilson's sacrifice fly. Edwards scored on a wild pitch just two batters later. SFC would score three in the first, two in the third and one in the fourth and sixth innings. The win would be only their second of the season as Serena Varvas would pick up the win and Sarah Purtle the save. Kristin Greenwood would get the loss for the Hawks throwing three innings and giving up nine hits and five earned runs. The game two win was a meaningful one for the Lady Hawks who celebrated eight seniors between the two games. Marlee Johnson is the only four year starter for UMES and a two sport athlete who leads the team in most offensive categories. Jennifer Wilson, a co-captain, was a mainstay in the outfield for three seasons and an emotional leader on the field. Autumn Parson finished her second year with UMES after transferring in from Hagerstown Community College, Tiffany Dingle, finishing her third season with the Hawks was a mainstay in the outfield the last two season, while Trisha Braxton also playing her third season for UMES pitched in as a hitter and outfielder. Playing their first year this season was Dana Blakey and Ashley Jones who both saw some playing time for the Hawks. Finally, a senior who will return next season, Christina Mason was the pitching staff for the last three years. "It has been an honor to work with these young women the last couple of years," said Coach Kirkland Hall. "I have really enjoyed it and I hope they have as well. This is a special group of young ladies." UMES closes out the season tomorrow in Philadelphia, Pa when they travel to play LaSalle. |
